I am short. I like that I am short. My jeans on the other hand are never short. I am just a bit too tall for petite and too short for regular. I hem all my jeans.  You must remember though, that I am  a procrastinator by nature.

Usually I end up leaving the hemming until the very last minute, like when I am about to walk out the door, sorry D.

A few years ago I was fed up with too long jeans so I did a web search to find the best way to hem them. I found a fantastic way to hem jeans. While it is great, it requires time and sewing.

I have a quick little twist to help you to hem your jeans in about 5 minutes with no sewing. You can even do it while you are wearing them, I do all the time.

Here you go.

You will need:

  • A bunch of safety pins, at least 10 per leg. More is better though.
  • Your jeans

First fold your jeans up to gauge where you would like them to hit. This should be half the length that they are too long. Half, because of the fold.

Place a safety pin just below the original jean hem (you want to keep this hem showing)

Then flip the fold inside, to test the length. You don’t want to finish it all and find that they are too short. Trust me on that one…I may have done it once or twice.

If you are satisfied that you like the length, un-flip it and continue to place safety pins every inch.

Lastly pin the folded seam to the pant leg seam to keep the folded part up inside the jeans.

Flip the folded part inside and Voila!

After washing these (with the safety pins in), the hem will look sharper.

*Also if you find the time you can take off the safety pins and sew along the same line to have a more secure hem. Here is the exact way (duplicated because the original site is gone) that I learned to hem my jeans a few years ago. The safety pins are still a good way to start – as a test drive to the length.

Happy Hemming!

Wow! Fantastic post! I am not short, but since the birth of my son, I am heavy and I guess that jean manufacturers believe that if you wear a 16, you must be tall. I have NO sewing ability. I've tried, and I screw it up every time. Can't wait to try this!

I definitely know what you mean by size 16's. I have that problem all the time.

i always order my jeans straight from the designer– so they come unhemmed. I have to take them to the seamstress before I can wear them, so this is a great tip for me. This way, I don't have to rush rush to get them hemmed!
